A dog takes the lead through the littered streets as she picks up discarded rubbish and throws it into the nearest bin

Good girl! A dog takes the lead through the littered streets as she picks up discarded rubbish and throws it into the nearest bin

  • Rescue dog Millie picks up trash left behind by lazy humans and gets rid of it
  • Owner Alfie Kitson, 80, need only say ‘trash it’ for her to duly oblige
  • She learned the trick while living in Spain with Mr. Kitson, a retired plumber

You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but this devoted animal could teach some of us a lesson.

Dressed in a Christmas jumper with reindeer antlers, rescue dog Millie picks up litter left by lazy humans and disposes of it.

Owner Alfie Kitson, 80, just has to point to the rubbish on the floor and say “put that in the trash” and the five-year-old Spanish podenco duly obliges.

She learned the trick while living in Spain with Mr Kitson, a retired plumber, and his wife Judith, 75, who returned to the UK 18 months ago.

“I appreciate it, as does Millie, and it helps keep the town clean and tidy,” Mr Kitson said.

Office worker Samuel Tiler, 45, who regularly sees Millie around Hereford, said: ‘It’s remarkable. I just wish people could be more thoughtful because it shouldn’t take a dog to clean up after them.

Mr Kitson, from Ullingswick, Herefordshire, added: ‘Millie is a very smart dog and seems to enjoy her little party trick.

“Passersby seem to love it and she always gets a small round of applause. She plays with the public, and so do I, if I’m being honest.

Father-of-three Mr Kitson taught Millie the trick after rescuing her from a shelter in Spain, where the couple lived for 20 years.

Millie was just eight months old when she was found abandoned in a rubbish bag tied to a tree branch.

After giving her a new home, the pensioner spotted a soldier and his dog walking around in a Malaga park and set about trying to get Millie to do the same.

He started putting a box, similar in size to a public trash can, in their Spanish garden, and gradually he raised its height as she understood dropping things into the box.

And luckily the bins in Hereford were just the right size for Millie to show off her talent when Mr and Mrs Kitson, a former company manager, returned to Britain.

He added: ‘Obviously environmental concerns are a hot topic right now, so if we can help clean the rubbish and plastic from the streets, we’re doing our part to help.’

“We saved Millie because our house was empty with no animals. Dogs and cats are an integral part of the life of anyone who loves animals.

“She’s not just family, she’s family and we’re happy to be able to show her to others because she really is an amazing dog.”
