No one had entered the Florida home for weeks, but the faithful Salvatore was undeterred. Every day, the dog sat patiently in a patch of grass outside the door, guarding the foreclosed house and hoping his family might return.
When local dog rescuer Gloria Cabal noticed Salvatore at her post, she knew she had to help.
Cabal spent over a month trying to get Salvatore to her using water, food and treats, but the nervous pup wouldn’t give up on his garden.
When a new realtor chased Salvatore to a nearby park, he finally accepted that his family wouldn’t return. Savaltore approached Cabal and let her take him to safety at the Everglades Angels Dog Rescue.
“He was very protective of his garden,” Everglades Angels staffer Denise Guevara told The Dodo. “He was basically guarding his property, but not, you know, aggressively or fiercely.”
Safely to the rescue, Salvatore quickly warmed up to the friendly staff. Everglades Angels employees were heartbroken that the dog, who clearly loved people, was left alone.
“It’s a favorite of volunteers,” Guevara said. “From what we could gather, he grew up with a family.”
Salvatore, who once refused to approach strangers, has become one of the most cuddly members of the shelter community – still begging for pets and jumping on the couch so he can snuggle into people’s laps.
“He’s really, really a sweetheart,” Guevara said.
Salvatore is now ready to be adopted by Everglades Angels, and staff members are sure he will find a home soon.
Thanks to so many caring animal lovers who refused to give up, Salvatore will have a second chance with a family that will never leave him behind.
