Shelter dog who gave up hope finds forever family thanks to viral moment

On the day of his adoption, Lucky thought he had found his own. The sweet beagle mix was so excited to finally leave the Green County Animal Shelter of Virginia in Ruckersville, Va. for a real home. But things did not stop there. Lucky soon found himself back at the shelter, losing hope of reuniting with his forever family.

“Our heart hurts so much for Lucky that he is having a hard time becoming a shelter dog again,” reads the shelter’s Facebook page. “More than a month in our shelter and not a single interest for you can be difficult.”

Lucky was first adopted from the shelter in March 2021 as a beagle mix puppy.

“Lucky’s family adored him so much, but with the size he grew, it became more than they could handle. We all thought Lucky was a beagle mix and would remain a medium-sized dog. Lucky has become more of a dog mix,” the shelter’s post read.

The sweet pup grew bigger than expected and was brought back to the shelter in September, where his hope for a better future dimmed.

“Lucky is really struggling as he was loved by his family,” the post continues. “[He] needs each of you to share it with your friends and family in the hope that it finds a family that can handle its size. Lucky is really a big lover and thinks he is a companion dog.

The post highlighted Lucky’s best attributes, including her great leash walking skills, her love of the outdoors and her adoration of children, cats and dogs.

“Lucky needs each of you to help him find happiness in being loved by a family,” the post read. “Please take the time to share this beautiful dog.”

After so long without any interest, Lucky finally started to get some attention as her Facebook post went viral.

“He was scared and nervous when he first came back,” Anna Swanson, spokesperson for the shelter, told The Dodo. “Lucky wasn’t very sociable when he arrived with new people. He liked to be outdoors, so he sat outside his kennel.

Within days, Lucky’s eternal family arrived and adopted him.

“Lucky is a very lucky boy!” the updated message reads. “Lucky found his new forever family today! All it took was one family to fall in love.

The now-famous dog will never have to worry about sitting in a shelter again. And it seems like luck was absolutely on Lucky’s side after all.
