Shelter throws the sweetest surprise party for an unadoptable senior dog

Meet Loco – a sassy senior pup who recently celebrated a milestone birthday. Usually, birthdays come and go quietly at the animal shelter, but for Loco, the Spartanburg Humane Society staff knew he had to do something the pup wouldn’t soon forget.

“She was wearing a birthday hat and a frilly collar, and the whole staff got together and sang for her,” Angel Cox, chief operating officer of the Spartanburg Humane Society, told The Dodo. “She had a sweet potato cake [and] she loved it! The company that made the cake brought her a Happy Birthday banner for her office door.

The guest list included many of Loco’s favorite people, but no dogs were allowed.

“She’s picky about her people,” Cox said. “When she loves you, she really love you. But the people she doesn’t like, she hated their. And she doesn’t like other dogs at all.

Although no dogs were part of the festivities, everyone enjoyed celebrating the spicy little nugget they’ve all known and loved for over two years.

Loco, who was released to the shelter in 2020 due to ongoing medical issues, became the face of the shelter. She even has her own cozy space to retreat away from the dogs — and people — she’d rather not be around.

“We moved her to a more comfortable office,” Cox said. “She has 3-4 dog beds and sleeps in all of them.”

Throughout his time at the shelter, Loco faced his fair share of medical issues.

“When she arrived she was 13, positive heartworms, thyroid issues and hip issues so she wasn’t a good candidate for adoption as she had so many issues and her care would cost dear to most people,” Cox said.

Now Loco has proven herself to be a real fighter. She is heartworm negative, regularly vaccinated, and takes thyroid medication to help keep her healthy.

Although she is a bit older than most residents of the shelter, she is otherwise in good health. With her new title of “office dog,” she’s not looking for a new home, but that doesn’t mean living a typical shelter life. Cox said her bravery was the reason she was one of the most memorable dogs they’ve ever had.

Here are many more birthdays, Loco!
